North goes South- Northern Soul in the South West – Keep The Faith

Northern Soul derived from the British Mod subculture, significant elements include, motor scooters, fashion and music. This ongoing documentary photography illustrates the subculture of this movement in the South West of England .
Dave Godlin a journalist who ran the Soul City record shop in covent garden London, during the 1960’s was responsible for developing the term Northern Soul in 1968. At this point soul music was developing and progressing from smoother sounding Mowtown to incorporate a more funky element.
Soul lovers from the north of England preferred the soul music of the mid 1960’s to the evolving more funk sounding soul music . Therefore the term ‘Northern soul’ arrived.
